Introduction of Ferrosilicon:

Ferrosilicon is a ferroalloy made up of iron and silicon, using coke, steel chips, quartz (or silica) as raw materials. Silicon and oxygen are easy to be combined to be silicon dioxide, so ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking, and because of the large amount of heat generated in the forming process of SiO2, it is also beneficial to improve the temperature of molten steel at the same time of deoxidizing.
Ferrosilicon can also be used as additive of alloying elements, which is widely used in low alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Ferrosilicon is often used as reducing agent in ferroalloy production and chemical industry.

Applications of Ferrosilicon:

1. Deoxidizer and alloying agent in steelmaking industry.
To get the steel that is qualified in chemical composition and ensure the quality of the steel, deoxidization is necessary in the final stage of steelmaking, the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is great, therefore ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizing agent used for precipitation and diffusion deoxidization. Adding a certain amount of silicon can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel.

2. Inoculant and nodulizer in cast iron industry.
Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry. It is cheaper than steel, easy to be melted and smelted, and it has excellent casting performance and much better aseismic ability than steel. Especially for ductile iron, its mechanical property is nearly equal to or close to those of steel. Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon in cast iron can prevent the formation of carbide in iron, promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite, so in the production of ductile iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (to help the precipitation of graphite) and nodulizer.

3. Reducing agent in ferroalloy production.
Not only is the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen great, but the carbon content of high silicon ferrosilicon is very low. Therefore, high silicon ferrosilicon (or siliceous alloy) is a commonly used reducing agent in the production of low carbon ferroalloy in the ferroalloy industry.
